Travel | Fergus Hotel Mar Mediterrania | Santa Susanna, Spain

Fergus Hotel Mar Mediterrania Santa Susanna Spain room
As I type this up, we've already checked out and waiting for our airport transfer at half four in the afternoon, so while its 3pm, and we've just finished lunch, what better way to pass the time than to reflect on the last few days in Spain and write up a review on the hotel?
We booked our holiday via Travel Zoo, and got a pretty good deal on it so when we looked into reviews of the hotel on TripAdvisor to find it currently taking the numero uno spot in the location we were headed for, needless to say we were pleasantly surprised, especially when the hotel has a four star rating.

Thanks to the included airport transfer, we checked in at Reception, went up in the lift (there are two provided) and found ourselves being allocated to room 205, only for us to find the room was a twin room. The hotel is advertised as adults only so was rather surprised to not be given a double especially since we had confirmation from the travel agency and various emails to the hotel about this. A few minutes later and after EUR140 swapping palms, we were upgraded to room 710 - a huge room with not just one, but two double beds, a jacuzzi bath and a corner balcony.  Not bad when you whittle it down and it works out to be EUR28 per night. Within the room, towels, bathrobes and slippers are supplied, as well as toiletries including toothbrush, shower cap, body wash and shampoo. There is a mini bar as well as a TV, and the safe comes with an additional charge. Word of warning, be careful when using the shower - ours leaked onto the floor and every time we used the bath/shower, we found ourselves using a towel to mop up the water.

Wi-Fi and Internet Access:
Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel which made planning our day outs easier with the password being detailed on the room key holder. We personally found that surfing the internet was disastrously slow in our room whether it was from our laptops, phones or tablets but not sure whether this may be because we're on the highest floor? We soon found out that the Wi-Fi access works best on Ground Level near the Reception where there is ample communal areas to relax and surf from. And if you forget your electronic equipment, the hotel also provides an Apple Mac computer that you can use.

Our holiday deal included half board i.e. breakfast and dinner inclusive and were informed by reception that if you wanted, you could change one of the meals to lunch if you wanted to go out for dinner in the evening for example. The food itself is a buffet style, serving both hot and cold food as well as dessert. Breakfast is a continental one with cold meats and cheeses, various cereals and breads, as well as a hot station where you can order eggs (fried/scrambled/omelette) to be freshly cooked in front of you. There is also a hot drinks machine offering coffee, hot milk and hot water (tea bags are provided) but there's just the one so there's normally a queue forming for this. Dinner is a similar story, offering fish and meats, pizzas and a salad bar. During dinner, unless you stay all inclusive, drinks (both soft and non-alcoholic) are extra.

The facilities of the hotel are generally good. There is the one outdoor swimming pool with a jacuzzi section to it, as well as deck chairs provided for sunbathing on. Towels are provided in the rooms (the purple ones are the beach towels) or you can hire them for a refundable deposit of EUR10. If the weather is a little too cold for sunbathing as it was at the end of April, then inside you will find an exercise room - albeit it being an exercise room with three machines - a heated jacuzzi pool, steam room and sauna. Part of the jacuzzi pool and the steam room were both not working at time of our holiday, but the sauna was a lovely experience. There's also an in house beauty therapist offering massages and facials but it's only one room, so no option to have a couple massage. Other than that, in the communal area, a piano is provided for your leisure as well as the bar offering drinks and music throughout the day.

We both agreed that the location of the hotel was pretty good in terms of accessing the local area. As our last holiday was five days in Barcelona last year, we didn't feel the need to go into there as we pretty much covered most of it. Instead, we opted stayed in the local area of Santa Susanna and explored local towns such as Girona and Figueres. The hotel practically sits on the beach which over looks the Mediterranean sea, and a few minutes walk the other direction, you'll find a host of shops and supermarkets including Carrefour (the Spanish version of Tesco), a Lidl and even a McDonald's. Tuesdays are market days which we briefly browsed through on the 10 minute walk to the rail station.

Overall, the hotel was a pleasant stay. I recommend staying here if you've already explored Barcelona and wanted to stay somewhere to relax not in the busy city. Trains to Barcelona while fairly frequent (one/two per hour) is around a 90minute journey each way which I imagine can be quite exhausting. According to Reception, they thoroughly recommend you to hire a car as there are many little villages and towns that is difficult to access via public transport. Both France and Andorra are a few hours drive away which you could explore without having to rely on excursions. If we were in the area again, we most likely definitely look to book at this hotel as the staff were friendly, the hotel was clean and had everything we needed during our stay here.
