How To Have a Fresh Start in 2016

We are exactly one week into 2016 and within the last 168 hours, I have lost count of the number of people who have hashtagged the life out of #newyearnewme, signed up for a new gym membership or are genuinely considering actually visiting the gym (guilty as charged) and started dry January all in a bid to make ourselves healthier and have a positive outlook on life. While we don't necessarily need to wait until the 1st January each year to kick start ourselves into action, here are some tips to get you started on the right track to achieving your goals
1. Evaluate Yourself
First and foremost, evaluate yourself. I do something which is called 360 degree feedback where I ask people I know and trust what they think of me. I tend to keep it simple and break it down into three categories: start, stop and continue. What should I start doing? What should I stop doing? And what should I continue doing? This way, you easily can pinpoint your strengths, your weaknesses and anything you yourself may have missed out if you just judge yourself. Remember, people will see you differently to how you see yourself and as a bonus, it gives you a confidence boost!

2. Get a Planner
I love it when a new year comes around because it means that new planners and diaries are in season! Being the stationery obsessed person I am, I love diaries a little more than perhaps the next person and constantly on the outlook for one that suits me. Up until recent years, my filofax was my trusted companion but more recently, I have opted for soft cover notebook type planners. My favourites include Moleskine weekly planner and the one I have opted for 2016: the Muji soft cover as both feature the week on one side and a page on the opposite which is perfect for notes and doodles. Find one you like and actually use it!

3. Set Some Goals
You know yourself best so you know what goals you want to achieve by the time New Year's Eve rolls back around again. Is it a career change? A job promotion? Get healthier? Whatever it is, make a note of it somewhere. If you write it down and can visualise it, you're more likely to achieve it. Make them realistic and achievable, and set yourself a timeline in order to achieve them by. Anything is possible once you put your mind to it - you've just got to figure out what that "anything" is!

4. Have a Positive Outlook
Nobody has ever achieved anything with a negative outlook on life, so keep an open mind and a positive one at that! Whether it is meditation or a journal that you use to keep your mind clear or confiding in close friends, don't go to bed angry or upset. Be grateful of what you have achieved that day. You gotta start small to end big!

5. Put Yourself First
Are you joining the gym or having dry January because you want to get fitter and healthier, or are you joining it because you're subsiding into peer pressure? Do you actually want to learn a new skill because you have passion for it or because you're trying to waste time? Do things for you, not because others want you to. The goals you set are personal to you because you want to achieve it, so make time for yourself and when things go down, remind yourself why you're doing it. Soon enough you'll find yourself achieving your goals well before 2017 hits us!
