Goodbye 2016, Hello 2017

So I started typing up this post yesterday on New Year's Eve, but procrastination took over and it's now become my first post of 2017. When I reflect back on 2016, it is one of those years where you look back in disbelief with all the events that happened, starting with David Bowie and Alan Rickman, ending with George Michael and Debbie Reynolds with a huge dosing of Trump in the middle. But let's not focus on the world's events as shoddy as they've been because while I've been quiet on the blog front, a few amazing things have been happening to me. So sit back with a glass of champers, kick your feet up and welcome to my roundup of 2016.

Copenhagen - Denmark

Each and every year, I promise myself I'd visit a new country. It's actually a great promise when you think about it - you're basically promising yourself a holiday each year and that's not a bad idea in my books. The first trip abroad was to Copenhagen with the other half for all of about 36 hours which made for a perfect weekend getaway. Tivoli may have been closed but that didn't stop us taking in what this Danish city had to offer. A morning canal cruise allowed us to explore Denmark from the waters allowing us to have the rest of the day to explore Nyhavn, The Little Mermaid (yes, really), the world's longest pedestrianised street of Strøget, the original LEGO store, Freetown Christiana, The Tower and Christianborg Palace and so much more.

Dublin - Ireland

I'm fortunate for the friends I have. Most of them I have known since I was 11 and have remained close friends with.. including one lovely Irish lady who goes by Siobhan. I imagine there was some Chinese food involved at Wong Kei's (obvs) but between the two of us, we decided to visit Dublin for the day inviting my sister and the other half. Of course we hit up The Guinness Factory, Temple Bar and Book of Kells/Trinity College, saw a spot of impromptu Irish dancing and whet our appetite with Irish soda bread, Irish stew and beef Guinness stew. All in a day's work :)

Veronika's Wedding

Another person I know from the age of 11 finally tied the knot in 2016! It was a l-o-n-g time coming and I'm so happy she's finally married!

Beijing and Shanghai - China

More travelling was heading my way, and this time a little bit further than Europe. Asia was on the cards - specifically Beijing with a weekend away in Shanghai. I had the greatest time out there, meeting some incredible people and eating some amazing food. I also caught up with a dear, dear friend of mine in her hometown of Shanghai and did a whirlwind tour of this beautiful city. It really was a massive highlight of 2016 and an experience I will not be forgetting anytime soon.

Lagos, Abuja, Kaduna, Sokoto - Nigeria

After a few years with the other half, it was high time I bit the bullet and visit Nigeria. I felt like I did a grand tour of the country visiting Lagos, Abuja, Kaduna and Sokoto, met all the family and friends, and felt accepted the second I walked over each and every threshold.

I cannot believe I visited four new countries in 2016, witnessed a wedding and so much more in 2016. I've created memories that won't be forgotten in a hurry, met new people and saw new sights. With all the crap that happened elsewhere in the world in 2016, I'm grateful for the personal memories 2016 gave me.

Happy New Year everyone.
